Create Meaningful Memories - Celebrate Your Kids This Yule!

Amidst the hustle and bustle of this festive season, one of the most cherished moments for me amidst the chaos is celebrating Yule with my children. This tradition has evolved into one of the most rewarding experiences for my family.

As we immerse ourselves in the holiday spirit, let's infuse our homes with joy through a few special activities. I've curated some ideas to inspire you, but before delving into these activities, I want to introduce a meaningful addition to our celebrations this year—honoring my kids' growth and individual triumphs this Yule, a tradition you can embrace too!

In our pursuit of creating memorable moments, we often overlook one of the most potent ways to uplift our children—celebrating their personal victories. While it's instinctive to offer a quick "Good job!" in passing, let's pause this Yule to reflect on the journey of our little ones.

Recall those significant milestones that once appeared insurmountable to them, now conquered effortlessly or transformed into newfound passions. For instance, my son grappled with math at the start of this school year. Long division seemed dull and challenging, and his interest waned. Despite numerous frustrations, with diverse resources and unwavering support, he persevered and emerged triumphant. Today, he not only divides numbers effortlessly but approaches it with enthusiasm. This newfound discipline has not only transformed him but also reflects in his approach to various mathematical problems.

Similarly, my other son embarked on his reading journey this semester. While seemingly trivial, he harbored doubts and believed he would never master this skill. The battle against self-defeat was arduous, yet today, he delves into chapter books with gusto and eagerly reads road signs during our car rides. My aim is to make these significant achievements moments of reflection, appreciating the journey that led to them.

Recognizing our children's accomplishments not only strengthens our bond with them but also instills a profound sense of self-worth and achievement in our young ones.

Often, our children navigate through life at a frenetic pace, grappling with self-doubt and the allure of the next challenge. They may overlook their growth and successes in the whirlwind of daily life. As parents, we possess the ability to illuminate their progress and endeavors.

Self-reflection and celebrating achievements play pivotal roles in personal growth. Sometimes, a simple acknowledgment can serve as a guiding light during moments of self-criticism or when we are engrossed in our personal evolution.

This season, let's make a concerted effort to not only commend the outcomes but also celebrate the journey, the strides, and the dedication demonstrated by our children. Let's cultivate a culture of celebration within our families, fostering confidence, resilience, and a profound sense of accomplishment.

Here are a few ideas for meaningful activities to do with your kids while you talk about their shining accomplishments this Yule:

  • Make Sun Wheels with Oranges - the process will fill your home with warmth and aroma

  • Make Mulling Spices - simmer for the aroma or add to a cyder - this is also a great gift for neighbors and loved ones

  • Gingerbread House Making - add the touch of a light inside the house

  • Yule Log

  • Bake Apples

  • Light a Candle

  • Follow a Shadow of an Object Placed in the Sun

  • Make Wassail

There are many ideas and plenty of good blogs filled with instructions and recipes. Jump online and plan your activities, and don’t forget to meditate on your child’s growth this year as part of your self-accomplishment! They might not have done it without you!

Wishing you warmth and much joy this season,
